Sri Lanka Muay Thai Kick Boxing Federation - since1987
Colombo

This is the address where Sri Lankan Muay Thai effectively started. Grand Master Renil Fernando founded the school in 1987 and is credited as the person who brought Muay Thai to the country. Beyond running the school, he organized the first ever Sri Lankan Muay Thai tournaments between 2000 and 2005, most of them at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium in Colombo. His credentials run across multiple international federations: he represents WKA (World Kick Boxing Association), WUMA (World United Martial Arts Association), IKBF Germany (International Kickboxing Federation), IMO (International Muay Thai Organization), and he serves as Sri Lanka ambassador for the World Tatsu-Ryu-Bushido Kai. For any student or visitor who wants to train where the discipline took root in Sri Lanka, there is simply no other option with this lineage.

About the Gym

An honest note about the profile of this school: this is a traditional martial arts institution, not a modern fight-prep gym. Alongside Muay Thai, the school teaches MMA, wrestling, yoga, traditional Japanese Tatsu-Ryu-Bushido, and offers therapeutic services. Reviews consistently describe the place less as a training facility and more as a second home, with students staying for years and often mentioning the personal growth and discipline they took away. The review count is modest (23) compared to Colombo's modern gyms, but the emotional depth of those reviews is unusually high. For anyone seeking authentic Muay Thai instruction with deep cultural and historical context, this is the destination. For anyone wanting active competition preparation against contemporary fighters, the modern competition-focused gyms in Colombo are likely a better fit. The school is located in Ragama, north of central Colombo, which means it sits a bit outside the urban core but remains accessible by car or tuk-tuk.
