Helsinki Thaiboxing Club
Helsinki

Helsinki Thaiboxing Club (HTBC) describes itself as the most successful Muay Thai club in Finnish history, and the coaching credentials back that claim more directly than most institutional self-descriptions. Head coach Petri Martinez has won the WMC Professional World Championship (-66.68 kg), the WAKO European Championship (-66.8 kg), the IFMA Amateur World Championship in 2000, the King's Cup Championship in 1999, plus multiple Finnish Championships and a European silver in 1999. He currently serves as training manager of the Finnish Muaythai Association. The wider coaching team adds further depth. Club chairman Antti Naakka is a Finnish Championship medalist. Coach Katarina 'Katru' Perkkiö brings an unusually decorated record for a national federation official: IFMA European Champion 2009, IFMA World Championship silver 2008, multiple Finnish Championships, and Nordic Championship golds across multiple years. She serves as a ring and rating judge for the IFMA (world body), EMF (European body), and SMTL (Finnish federation), and is vice-chair of the Finnish Muay Thai Federation. The roster also includes Meea Salmela (2022 Finnish Champion -48kg, PM silver -45kg), Marko Assinen (Finland's oldest active pro Muay Thai fighter, long-term Thailand training base), and Alex Francisquini who runs the Sunday technique group in English.

About the Gym

The 500 square meter training hall in Kallio is one of the larger dedicated Muay Thai spaces in Northern Europe. The facility includes spacious changing rooms, showers, a boxing ring, several hundred square meters of padded floor, kick pads, bags, gloves, kettlebells, plates, and dumbbells. The class schedule runs seven days a week, which HTBC notes is unique among Finnish Muay Thai clubs. Program structure is unusually inclusive. Beyond general adult training there are dedicated Ladythai sessions (women-only Thai boxing), Junnuthai for juniors, and an English-language Sunday technique group. Pricing is transparent and bracketed: a 2-month beginner course costs €100, adult membership ranges from €75 (1 month) to €400 (12 months), Ladythai from €60 (1 month) to €180 (6 months), Junnuthai from €25 (1 month) to €120 (6 months). One-time training is €10. An honest note: one critical review describes hygiene issues in the women's changing room — the club responded that as a non-commercial sports association, much cleaning is done by volunteers and they aim to improve. That's transparent of them and not unusual for non-profit clubs.
