About the Gym

If Amsterdam is the cradle of Dutch kickboxing, Mejiro Gym is the cradle within the cradle. Founded in 1978 by Jan Plas — who learned the art from Kenji Kurosaki in Tokyo — it produced an extraordinary lineage of champions: Rob Kaman, Peter Aerts, Remy Bonjasky, Lucien Carbin and many more. Its founding members included Johan Vos, who went on to start Vos Gym, which is why Mejiro sits at the root of the whole city's scene. Today sensei André Mannaart (a multiple-organisation world champion) and his son Roel continue the Mejiro Style. Honest framing: this is fundamentally a kickboxing institute (K-1 and Dutch style), not a traditional Thai gym, and its old-school, no-nonsense intensity isn't for everyone — some reviewers find it cold or strict, others call it the best dojo in the country. If you want to train on historic ground at the source of Dutch kickboxing, there is nowhere else like it.
