Charn Chai Muay Thai ★
Pai's best-known camp: traditional training twice a day and fighters in the ring most weeks.
Pai is a small mountain town with eight muay thai gyms, some of the lowest prices in Thailand and trainers who know your name by day two. Find your ideal gym below.
Pai is a small town in the mountains of Mae Hong Son, about three hours by minibus from Chiang Mai, and it has more muay thai gyms per head than almost anywhere in the country: eight gyms for a town of a few thousand people. That makes it one of the easiest places in Thailand to train for a week or a month without the crowds and the prices of Phuket or Bangkok. Gyms are small, groups rarely go above ten, and most of the town is walkable from the guesthouses around the walking street.
The gyms fall into three types. Charn Chai is the one most travellers end up at: traditional training, two sessions a day, more than four hundred reviews and fighters in the ring most weeks. Sitjemam is the live-in camp, a family-run gym in the rice fields ten minutes north of town with rooms on site, small groups matched by level, and a female co-founder, which makes it a good pick for first-timers and for women who prefer a female coach. Pai Fit, by the walking street, is a fitness gym with a daily muay thai class and a sauna, for people who want to stay in shape rather than fight. The rest, Apple Muay Thai in Wiang Tai, Razorback and Warhog at Pai Park Cottage, Sit Kru Gong in Mae Hi and The Art of 8 Limbs in Mae Yen, are small family gyms with strong reviews and no website, so message them on WhatsApp or Instagram for the schedule.
Nearly every gym trains Monday to Saturday with a morning session around 8:00 to 10:00 and an afternoon session around 15:00 to 17:00, and Sunday is a rest day. Single sessions are around 350 baht, a week of training around 2,500 to 3,000 baht and a month around 9,000 baht. Live-in packages with a room start at roughly 150 USD a week. Prices shift between seasons, so confirm with the gym before you travel.
Pai has its own fight night, held at the Sit Kru Gong gym in Mae Hi, where local gyms put fighters in the ring. It is the easiest place in town to watch muay thai live and, for students at the gyms, sometimes the place for a first fight. December and January are peak season and rooms fill up, so book early for a long stay, and rent a scooter if your gym is outside the centre.

It depends on what you want, and nothing on this site is ranked by payment. Charn Chai has the most reviews, the most traditional training and an active fight team. Sitjemam is the best choice if you want to live at the camp and train in a small group, and the only gym in town with a female co-founder on the floor. Pai Fit suits people who want gym equipment and a sauna with their muay thai. The smaller family gyms, Sit Kru Gong among them, are the most personal and the cheapest way to train one on one.
Yes, and most students here are. Charn Chai and Sitjemam both take first-timers and keep them away from the fighters until they are ready, and the small family gyms adjust the intensity to what you ask for. Sparring is never forced. Bring or buy gloves and hand wraps; Sitjemam lends kit for the length of your stay.
Around 350 baht for a single session, 2,500 to 3,000 baht for a week of twice-daily training and about 9,000 baht for a month. Live-in packages that include a room start around 150 USD a week and 480 USD a month. These are among the lowest prices in Thailand. Confirm with the gym, prices change between seasons.
Yes. Pai Fight Night is held at the Sit Kru Gong gym in Mae Hi and features fighters from the local gyms, including Charn Chai. Dates are irregular, so ask your gym for the next one.
Minibuses leave Chiang Mai's Arcade bus station roughly every hour and take about three hours on a very winding road, for around 150 to 200 baht. Motion sickness tablets are a good idea. Chiang Mai has the nearest airport.
