About the Gym

Charn Chai has been part of Pai's backpacker life for years and has the reviews to show for it, more than four hundred at the time of writing. Training is traditional and unhurried: a morning and an afternoon session, Monday to Saturday, built around pad rounds with Thai trainers, bag drills, clinch work and conditioning. Sparring is on the menu once your trainer thinks you are ready, and twice a week the whole gym runs out to the Big Buddha before class. Founder Bee fought as Mongkoldej Sitthepitak at the big Bangkok stadiums, and the coaching team includes a recently retired Thai national champion. Beginners are the majority, but the gym also prepares students for a first fight, and its Thai and foreign fighters compete almost weekly in Chiang Mai or at Pai Fight Night. Rooms are cheap and plentiful nearby outside the December and January peak.

Class Schedule

  • Mon to Sat, morning session 8:00 to 10:00 and afternoon session 15:00 to 17:00. Closed Sunday. Group runs to the Big Buddha twice a week. Hours can shift on Thai public holidays.
